Scope and Contents The extract covers the period 1541-1571. There is a brief description of the original manuscript on the flyleaf of the present volume. According to Robert Pitcairn in his preface to the published work, the original manuscript was probably destroyed sometime during the French Revolution, having been housed in the Scots College at Douai. Scope and Contents

The original compilation was probably made in 1672 (see Adv.MSS.32.6.1, folio 154 and 34.3.14, folio 42) and is attributed to Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh. However, an 18th-century footnote added to the title page of Adv.MS.34.3.19 states that the collection was originally compiled by Sir Patrick Lyon of Carse, and that his manuscript was copied by Mackenzie and others who made their own additions to it.

Scope and Contents

It appears to have been copied, with substantial differences in places, from the first edition which was printed at Edinburgh about 1536. The chronicle is continued, as Books xviii-xxii (folio 321), by the 'Historie and chronicles of Scotland' by Robert Lindesay of Pitscottie to the year 1566. This is followed (folio 447), as Book xxiii, by another continuation, in considerably less detail, as far as the year 1604 and (folio 463) 'Some late accidentes', a list of events from 1612 to 1637.
